Day 7, July 28, 2020
Double Hog Pen Gap to Double Spring Gap (at the GA/TN state line, woot!)
Mile 82.9
Eventful day on trail today…I saw another human being!
He didn’t want to talk, though.
I tried not to think of that lady in Texas who was killed by feral pigs when I saw another group of the black beasts, hair along their backs standing straight up as they ran along the ridge above me.
At the top of Flat Top Mountain I found a moss-covered cement slab next to an old foundation and stopped for breakfast. This is another way I hike my own hike. Instead of shoving a bar in my mouth in between stuffing my sleeping bag into its sack and rolling up my tent, I wait until I’ve hiked a few miles, find someplace pretty, stop for a leisurely breakfast where there’s a view.
So far, views have been scarce along this trail.
But I’m just as happy with old growth trees, leaves rustled by a breeze.
And spectacular, brain-shaped fungi.
