Welcome to my blog.
Expect reflections on long distance hiking, hiking culture, nature, creativity and my undying love for backrests.
Seriously, y’all, don’t underestimate the rigors of hiking in the desert.
I only made it 45 miles and I wasn’t even the first one taken out. (The first to go was a hiker who’d drunk 9+ liters of water the first day then spent the second day retching his way to the nearest road where he was whisked away by a CDT trail angel. Lesson: there is such a thing as too hydrated, even in the desert).
I wrecked my ankles and had to go home to heal, think about what went wrong and what I might do differently next time (skip the desert part?) and try really hard not to spiral from disappointment into shame for failing so early.

Failed again! But I’m getting better at avoiding the disappointment into shame spiral.
Who cares if I make it to the end? I’m practicing patting myself on the back for making it to the trailhead!
I’m sad about not getting to spend more time in Glacier National Park, though, because it is knock-your-socks off spectacular. And now that they have a lottery system for backcountry permits and I’ve got a plan for getting my trail legs before I get to the next hard trail, I’ve not given up on completing what I started in 2023.
