Welcome to my blog.
Expect reflections on long distance hiking, hiking culture, nature, creativity and my undying love for backrests.
On the spectrum between social butterfly and hermit, I list precariously toward the hermit end. Not at all uncomfortable with reclusiveness. So 2020 didn’t knock me off my game as much as it did so many others. I’d hoped to win the John Muir Trail lottery for a September trek through the Sierras, but wasn’t disappointed when that failed to fall into place.
Instead, I planned the perfect pandemic hike. The Benton MacKaye Trail was perfect (for me) because it’s close to home and I had support that kept me socially distanced. My husband came out every five or so days with my resupply, clean clothes and big salads; he semi-supported me up the trail and back down again. I never had to go into town to swap germs. Never had to hitchhike. I mostly had the BMT to myself. (Not the AT, though. It was crowded, so I turned into the stealth-camping maven).
When I finished the AT through the Smokies, I got to celebrate finishing, at long last, the entire Appalachian Trail (woot). I decided to keep going to finish the BMT/AT Figure Eight because I’m all about obscure hiking projects.
