A Formula for Eating Well on the Trail (And a Free Cookbook for You)
Did you know you can pour boiling water into a Ziplock freezer bag and it won’t melt?
Why is this even important?
This isn’t just a random fun fact.
This matters! Because now you don’t have to pay $12 a meal for one of those pouches of dehydrated Chili Mac found in every outfitter store from here to Shangri-La.
Seriously.
Do you really want to pay $12 for hamburger helper?
Not when you can customize your own freeze dried meals and eat exactly the food that nourishes you and titillates your taste buds.
Did I mention it's super simple and easy and there's no actual cooking involved?
I’ve cracked the code and today I give you the formula I use for putting together freezer bag meals that you’ll actually be excited to eat.
Exciting because you choose exactly what you want to put in the bag.
First, the Concept
Before I share the formula, let’s review the concept. Because freezer bag cooking was news to me just a few short months ago.
Now I’m so deep into it that there have been many a night when I’ve raided my camping box and “cooked” a freezer bag meal for dinner.
Like last night, when I enjoyed this delicious Coconut Chicken Curry.
It tasted just a good at home as it did on a backpacking trip. That surprised me a little.
Here’s how it works:
You put your favorite freeze-dried or dehydrated ingredients into a Ziplock or Glad freezer bag*.
When you’re hungry, you boil water and pour it directly into the freezer bag. They don’t melt, remember?
Stir it or squish it between your hands…it’s hot, BTW, so be careful.
Put the bag in a cozy if you have one.
Wait 20 or so minutes, stirring occasionally.
Eat with relish and abandon.
*Ziplock and Glad brands are BPA free. IT MUST BE A FREEZER BAG. Regular ones will melt and ruin your whole life.
And here’s the formula:
That’s it!
You get to be as creative as you want to be and cater each meal to your particular taste.
I always add Vogue chicken broth powder for flavor.
And I always add chia seeds because you don’t have to be so precise in the amount of water you use to rehydrate.
Whoa! Too minimalist? No problem.
It really is that simple, but I hear rumblings from the culinarily-challenged out there.
If you’re not yet a master chef and this formula is a little too minimalist for you, no problem.
